This module is not approved as a discovery module
- To understand some of the major established academic knowledge, theories and concepts of human growth, behaviour and development within sociology and psychology in relation to social work practice.
- To discuss the impact of structural and environmental issues on our understanding of the life course of differing communities/ community groups
- To develop knowledge of the impact of drugs and alcohol use on the life course of children and adults in relation to social work practice
- Be able to describe and explain contemporary theories about human growth and development - applying the impact of culture, race, gender, ability, class, age and sexual orientation on the development process
- Be able to describe and explain specific transitions within the life course and growth and development issues at various stages of a person’s life
- To understand a range of theoretical perspectives in working with drugs and alcohol issues in social work practice
- To be able to describe current policy and law in relation to alcohol and drug use

Group collaboration case studies and class quizzes to support learning
Presentation topic to be agreed between students and module leader
Students will get the opportunity to answer questions in class and to engage in group activities to develop an understanding of their progress. There will also be the opportunity to use group tutorial support to check their understanding prior to the exam.
