Module summary

On this module, you will develop your ability as an academic researcher. You will develop your understanding of and ability to use academic English in both written and spoken communication. You will write a literature review synthesising a set of sources within your discipline. You will reflect on your learning in a presentation. The lessons and tasks on this module will provide you with feedback and evidence to use in the following 6-week module of your programme, where you will have summative assessments.

Objectives

This module provides you with the opportunity to demonstrate a knowledge of the language and skills applicable to academic communication; demonstrate an understanding of the issues, cultures and concepts involved in UK academic study and exhibit developing competence in the use and understanding of academically acceptable forms of English, both spoken and written

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1.Recognise and apply knowledge of the selected academic genres and their structure.
2. Employ knowledge of the academic conventions used in spoken and written texts, including ethical use of sources, citation, referencing and Generative AI.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
3. Use spoken and written academic English that suits a clear communicative purpose, including coherent, accurate and fluent use of a wide lexical resource and a range of appropriate structures.
4. Demonstrate a critical and reflective approach to their work and that of others by evaluating it and drawing implications.
