This module helps you develop the language skills, knowledge and understanding required for postgraduate study in the field of Civil Engineering. You will study subject-specific content to help develop academic skills, language competence and the ability to communicate at an appropriate academic level within your discipline. This course helps develop familiarity with academic discourse within Civil Engineering and provide opportunities to practise being an active member of the learning community.
In alignment with the aims of the Language Centre’s Pre-sessional programmes, the pre-sessional content-based provision aims to prepare you to integrate your postgraduate programme with confidence and familiarity with the English literacy and skills required.
The module aims to help you meet the language requirements of your future academic programme and to display linguistic and literacy skills to a level that will enable you to communicate competently within your discipline-specific academic context at postgraduate level. You will develop an awareness and understanding of the cultures, context and discourse of academic study in your discipline and an understanding of ethical academic practices in your discipline. You will develop into autonomous and reflective learners.
1. Recognise and apply knowledge of English academic literacy (including verbal and visual), language and skills required in your MSc programme.
2. Demonstrate audience and discourse awareness, including of typical genres in the STEM disciplines.
3. Display awareness of ethical academic practices, including in relation to the use of Gen AI.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

Opportunities for feedback will be provided through: Checking, and formative feedback of, weekly performance on tasks, presentations and seminar participation. Checking, assessing and giving feedback on progress with weekly written tasks. In-class informal observation by teachers on your use of language and level of engagement. The final assessments are based specifically on the core areas of academic language and subject specific literacy as well as your future field of study and Masters’ programme.
