The Language for Science pre-sessional module is designed with input from academics in both the University of Leeds Language Centre and the science disciplines, allowing the language learning to be integrated and built around key types of texts, assignments and learning activities within the content areas. It also allows you to develop a deeper understanding of how disciplinary knowledge is communicated in your own subject.
In alignment with the aims of the Language Centre’s Pre-sessional programmes, the pre-sessional content-based provision aims to prepare you to integrate into your postgraduate programme with confidence and familiarity with the English literacy and skills required. The programme aims to help you meet the language requirements of your future academic programme and to display linguistic and literacy skills to a level that will enable you to communicate competently within their discipline-specific academic context at postgraduate level. You will develop an awareness and understanding of the culture, context and discourse of academic study in your discipline and an understanding of ethical academic practices in your discipline. You will also develop into autonomous and reflective learners.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Recognise and apply knowledge of English academic literacy (including verbal and visual), language and skills required in your MSc programme.
2. Demonstrate audience and discourse awareness, including of typical genres in the STEM disciplines.
3. Display awareness of ethical academic practices, including in relation to the use of Gen AI.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
4. Use English to communicate competently within your subject-specific fields.
5. Apply appropriate academic integrity conventions and practices within your own studies.
6. Employ effective strategies to approach your academic studies in English.
