Module summary

The module is intended to prepare you for undergraduate degrees in Art and Design and Social Sciences by teaching the academic skills needed to be successful in these fields. The main emphasis is on the academic skills of reading, writing, research and critical thinking. These skills are taught through the overall topic of ‘Contemporary Global Issues’, which is divided into short projects.

Objectives

This module is designed to prepare you with the necessary English language, literacies and academic study skills required for undergraduate study in the Arts and Social Sciences. It provides training in how to produce written academic coursework (assignments); how to give oral presentations and participate effectively in seminars and tutorials appropriately in English; and how to conduct short research exercises and training in how to access and use all of the University's services. It also provides you with awareness of the conventions and vocabulary of academic English and techniques for independent language learning. The module introduces you to Academic Integrity and to the university’s standards and expectations regarding this. You will take the Academic Integrity Test and adhere to these standards throughout your studies on this module (and transfer these skills to all your modules) which will be assessed via the extended writing assessment.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module you will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject: It is expected that by the end of this module you should be able to:
1. Recognise and apply knowledge of English academic multimodal literacy, language and skills required in your UG programme.
2. Demonstrate audience and discourse awareness, including of typical genres in the Arts and Social Sciences disciplines.
3. Apply awareness of of academic integrity conventions and practices.

On successful completion of the module you will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes: 4. Use English to Communicate competently within your subject-specific fields 5. Employ knowledge of the academic conventions used in spoken and written texts, including ethical use of sources, citation, referencing and generative AI 6. Justify appropriate strategies to approach your academic studies.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Your progress is monitored on a continuous basis by each tutor through your participation in class activities and through the grading of assessed pieces of work. You are provided with detailed feedback about each piece of work and are provided with an opportunity to attend regular 1:1 consultations with tutors. For the written assignments, you are required to submit a draft version. The tutor provides feedback about the draft. For the oral assessments, you will participate in a group presentation and practice seminar, for which you will receive formative feedback in preparation for your assessed individual presentation and seminar discussion.
