This module is not approved as an Elective
This module will provide you with the opportunity to undertake an independent small-scale research project, designed and carried out with the support of an individual supervisor. The resulting research may lead to the development of new understanding on an issue or the development of a professional artifact such as an intervention (with a written report) or report that directly informs practice.
Identify either a topic of immediate individual concern in their own institution or a generic educational topic;
- engage in discussion with a tutor(s) concerning how this topic might be investigated;
- under supervision, carry out reading and study, and, if appropriate, research, on this topic;
- put this topic in a broader perspective, ensuring where appropriate that the experience of more than one school or college is considered and that recent evidence/research of the national/local situation is included;
- under supervision, write up the research in an appropriate form.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
Students who complete this module will have the knowledge needed to carry out a search of the literature on a chosen topic and/or an understanding of how to carry out small scale empirical research to inform understanding and/or develop educational practice.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
the ability to weigh up different arguments and perspectives, using supporting evidence to form opinions, arguments, theories and ideas.
the ability to search for, evaluate and use appropriate and relevant information sources to help strengthen the quality of academic work and research.
The ability to convey and receive information clearly, accurately, and appropriately
the ability to plan time, prioritise tasks and organise academic and personal commitments effectively using appropriate support
Students negotiate their dissertations on an individual basis under the guidance of the module tutor and their allocated dissertation supervisor.
Research skills will be taught in the module EDUC5117M Research skills in (deaf) education
Students will be allocated a dissertation supervisor who will discuss the dissertation proposal, support them to gain ethical approval and meet with them on a regular basis as the study progresses.
